Today I wanted to show very affordable unit from Qnap which will be great for most of us if our intention is to have a safe backup for our data, run some CCTV cameras and perhaps enjoy some media streaming.
The best box for that will be Qnap TS-453b with 8GB of RAM, that space of RAM is minimum and it will also enable you to run VMware if you want to !
Unit like that does come with Intel Celeron J3455 quad core 1.5GHz processor which can be clocked to 2.3GHz, Intel HD 500 Graphic card, two slots for memory which are currently occupied with 2x 4GB of RAM (there is also 4GB version available with 2 x 2GB of RAM but I would vote against it! )
Qnap can accommodate up to four 3.5″ or 2.5″ SATA drives as well as SSDs, it has 2x 1Gbe ports which can be aggregated as one for speeds improvements, it also has PCIe slot so you can easily expand it by adding 10Gbe card ! There is of course 5x USB3.0 ports and even direct port on the front of this little machine which will allow you to quickly copy the data like you do using external hard drive! Box comes with 2x HDMI ports and with specs mentioned and direct connection to TV you can easily watch 4K content (if you are planning to access it over the network update it to 10Gbe !)
Box is fantastic companion if you are looking for home entertainment storage as well as a reliable but affordable business solution to keep your data safe and run some necessary applications. It also combines very well home office needs so can be used for both purposed at the same time.
It is worth to mention that you can always purchase USB3.0 expansion unit for it and they do come as 5-bay or 8-bay systems, this will save you from purchasing another box or bigger drives (and utilising the old ones) when you quickly fill up the unit.
It does not have to be fully populated, you can start with 1 or 2 drives to start with and expand it over the time. It also comes with little remote control which you will be using once you connect it to your TV via HDMI port.
